what sort information would you want to collect during and after a live game to become better at the game? maybe notes on certain hands you played and how you could have played it better. maybe take note of the type of players at the table. what information would you want to collect? |

Seeing as you have specifically asked about LIVE games, I will start by saying anything you would take note of online, should also be noted (or remembered) live. That said, in a live game, you want to try to notice any physical tells or tendancies a player may have. 1 player I played often (poker league) would 'spin' his bets/raises whenever he was strong. Or if a player is usually very relaxed at the table, then during a hand they 'clam up' or in some other way deviate from usual behaviour you can note this and figure out what it means (in the example I gave it usually means a big hand). Notes on specific hands are a good idea (especially big hands or if you make big laydowns), post game analysis is definitely needed to improve, but noting individual players is only useful if you are likely to play them again (ie a poker league or weekly home game). But noting any physical tells/tendancies will make you better able to notice them in new players... Be alert especially during hands you arent playing in: you can give 100% of your attention to the live players not having to worry about your own play. The only information you can collect AFTER a game is anything you can manage to get the other playters to tell you... Often if you are playing with friends, you can do so with the specific intention of ALL having a post-game discussion, and telling each other any leaks you may have noticed, or whatever to improve all your game's. Like above, if this was a friend of mine and we were to do this, I would say "I notice you always spin your chips with a monster hand". Myself and a few of my friends have done this. We placed a 'hand counter' on the board, and waited 60 seconds between each hand for each player to make notes like "Hand 27: AhKh : raised preflop, bet every street" and it is the dealers responsibility to record the board cards. Then after we can all compare hands in the discussion... I can see for example "Dave bluffed me off top pair on a flush board, hand 12 by a pot bet when the flush card hit ofter floating the flop" or whatever, or Matt always seems to fold to pressure without atleast top pair-good kicker on the flop (leak). This can be immensly insightful and useful. |
