Through a rakeback promotion, I got a copy of HEM. I've been playing online poker casually for about a year -- what stats would be good for me to start tracking in the HUD?

I think virtually every HUD should have the following stats, at a minimum:

  • You want the BIG 3 stats: VP$IP, PFR, and AF.
  • You want NUMBER OF HANDS. Most important statistic in all of HM.
  • You want BLIND STEALING stats: Att to Steal, Fold BB to Steal, Fold BB to SB steal.
  • You want PREFLOP RAISING stats: in addition to PFR above, 3-Bet %, cold-call PF, etc.
  • You want FLOP stats: c-bet and fold to c-bet %.
  • You want SHOWDOWN stats: WTSD and W$SD.
  • You want PROFIT stats: Amount Won for cash games (and tourneys, if you have it).

I think that's a good set of basic stats virtually every HUD should have for each opponent. You can easily fit these with room left over into a typical 4-panel "hollow box" layout. Then the question becomes what custom/advanced/obscure stats do you want, in addition to the basic palette.

But if you have no idea what these stats mean or how they're interpreted I'd start with the Big 3 (VP$IP, PFR, and AF) as that's what you'll see discussed everywhere, and then I'd start bringing other stats in as I felt I had a handle on their interpretation.

It's depend on your preflop and postflop strategy.

Write down your basic lines what you will use in your play.

You should find out which stats you should consider in EV calculation of the line. (For instance if there is a c-bet in your line you should consider villain's fold to c-bet.)

Write down these stats for all lines and you get which stats you should put to the HUD.

If you did not do this "line check" job yet or you are a starter then I think VPIP+PFR is enough. There is no reason to put other stats if you don't know exactly why you put them out.

Maybe you can put out one more stat: aggression percentage. But these aggression stats are obsolete because there are more specify stats.

I think it also depends on exatly what you are playing? Cash? Tourneys? HU SnGs?
Perhaps start with the default layouts (maybe play around with the colour coding first).
All of the stats listed by codingthewheel are available by hovering the mouse over a players stats. Personally I think it more important to keep them uncluttered, than to have lots of them. You can put the more obscure into popups.
Pretty sure HEM doesnt list amount won for tourneys... I tried this intending it to indicate a streak (and possible tilt is very -ve), but is always showed 0 in tourneys.
If you do put lots of stats into the HUD, 1 tip I find very useful (esp at the start) is to write what the stats are (where they occur) on a sheet of paper, nice and big so you can read easy, and stick it on the wall behind your monitor (or wherever).
Also put some time into a colour coding that you can easily identify with. Something like RED if the stat value indicates danger(ous player), GREEN if it indicates fishy, and maybe ORANGE and YELLOW for intermediate values, but I have seen a few different colour codings that looked good.
The HUD subforum on the HEM forums has some good information about this...

Dangerous is not the opposite of fishy. When an 40/2 fish raises, get out of the way of that raise unless you have speculative hand.

I think my overall point is clear though... and what I am saying is the '2' (I assume you mean PFR) would be a dangerous stat, cos it means they only raise premium hands... (so would be RED in my HUD) And why would you call with speculative hands only (implying folding better hands)? In another related question I provide actual values... perhaps that would make what i mean clearer reading that?
